Saluting The Gramophone Era
VIEW EVENT DETAILSIn celebration of International Women's Day, Asia Society generously supported by Ms. Sophie Ahmed explores the advent of the record and gramophone era in India, as popular culture underwent a dynamic transformation making it open and accessible to the masses. There was a rise of female artistes who performed on record with flare, developing their own signature styles of performance and gaining popularity with a wide audience. Join us as we trace the repertoire of women in the gramophone era with the melodious Vidya Shah, as she takes us through her highly acclaimed project 'Women on Record'.
Vidya Shah is trained in Carnatic music, North Indian genres of Khayal (from Shubha Mudgal and Mujahid Hussain Khan), Thumri Dadra, and Ghazal (from Shanti Hiranand). Shah has performed at national and international forums, including the Tansen Samaroh in Gwalior, Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C, Asia Society in New York and the British Museum in London. A popular performer and a prolific composer, she is the recipient of the Charles Wallace Award and a Senior Fellowship from the Government of India for her project 'Women on Record'. Her special performances include 'The Last Mughal' with author William Dalrymple, 'Akhtari- the Life of Begum Akhtar' with Actor and Story Teller Danish Husain, and 'Rung- Sufiana' a rendition of Sufiana Kalam.
