The Culture of Giving
VIEW EVENT DETAILSIn 1998, Anshu Gupta took the ultimate leap of faith; leaving his corporate job for a life of social service. Seeing increasing inequality in India, Gupta identified a basic, unfulfilled need among those living in poverty – clothing. His NGO Goonj set about revolutionizing how we view ‘trash’ by repurposing household waste, rags and clothes. 17 years on and Goonj reaches over 21 states across India as a result of its association with over 250 grassroots organisations. A radical philanthropist, Gupta advocates fiercely for the dignity of the receiver over the self-importance of the giver. Join us, as Gupta shares his vision, his optimism, and the transformation of the culture of giving.
Anshu Gupta is the founder of Goonj. Known as the Clothing Man and recipient of 2015 Ramon Magsaysay ward, Gupta founded Goonj with a mission to make clothing a matter of concern and to bring it among the list of subjects for the development sector. Gupta is an Ashoka and Schwab Fellow, listed by the Forbes magazine as one of India’s most powerful rural entrepreneurs, a member of the Asia 21 Young Leaders Initiative, and he has also been conferred with CNN-IBN Real Heroes Award.
