Recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine, she is a recipient of numerous awards for her administration of Houston. Yet, Mayor Parker’s proudest role is as a parent in a family formed by love*. Join us for an intimate and off the record discussion delving into Mayor Parker’s experiences as one of two women to have held the post of Mayor in Houston and as the city’s first openly gay Mayor. Mayor Annise D. Parker, will be joined in conversation by Parmesh Shahani, Head, Godrej India Culture Lab.
Mayor Annise D. Parker is Houston’s 61st mayor and one of only two women to hold the City’s highest elected office. As the City's chief executive officer, she is responsible for all aspects of the general management of the City and for enforcement of all laws and ordinances.In addition to her duties as mayor, Parker is a member of President Obama’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience, chairs the U.S. Conference of Mayors Criminal and Social Justice Committee, serves as a member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary’s Advisory Council and on the boards of the Texas Environmental Research Consortium and Houston Galveston Area Council. Parker and her wife Kathy Hubbard have been together for more than 23 years and are advocates for adoption, with three daughters and a son.
Parmesh Shahani is the head of the Godrej India Culture Lab and the author of the book 'Gay Bombay: Globalization, Love and (Be)Longing in Contemporary India'. He is a Yale World Fellow, World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, TED Fellow and a Utrecht University-Impakt Fellow.
