As International Women’s Day approaches, join Asia Society and Citibank in celebrating the progress made toward women’s empowerment and highlighting significant challenges that remain. Join Shabana Azmi, actress-activist, and Ana Duarte McCarthy, Chief Diversity Officer at Citi as they discuss their personal journeys and commitment to empowering women in the workplace. This conversation will be followed by a live performance by acclaimed playback singer, Rekha Bhardwaj.
Shabana Azmi is the daughter of noted Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi and theatre actress Shaukat Kaifi. She grew up in a family that believed Art should be used as an instrument for social change. She has won five National Awards for Best Actress, three of them in a row, which is an unprecedented feat. As chairperson of Nivara Hakk, she undertook a 5-day hunger strike for slum dwellers in Bombay and was successful in obtaining land for displaced slum dwellers. She is a winner of the Padmashree and Padma Bhushan. She was awarded the Gandhi International Peace Prize at the House of Lords in 2006. She was UN Goodwill Ambassador for Population and Development and continues to work on issues of Public Health.
Ana Duarte McCarthy is the Managing Director and Chief Diversity Officer at Citi. Appointed to the role in 2002, Ana is responsible for the development and integration of Citi’s global workforce diversity strategy for hiring and developing diverse talent, fostering an inclusive work environment and ensuring management accountability. Since assuming the role, Ana has established a framework of policy and practices that have advanced Citi’s recognition as a top company for diversity and inclusion. Among her accomplishments, Ana led teams that designed and launched Citi’s flexible work strategies and leadership development initiatives for women and initiated Citi’s employee network programme, now spanning more than 100 networks globally.
Rekha Bharadwaj is a renowned Indian playback singer known for her distinctive style of singing. She has sung over 50 super hit Bollywood songs. Known for her Sufi performances and soulful voice, she has performed over 500 concerts all over the world. This programme is part of Asia Society India Centre’s Women of Asia Series, which brings eminent women from the fields of Asian business, arts, culture and policy, and provides a senior level platform for discussion on issues of current interest affecting Asia and the world. This series promotes the collaboration and leadership of accomplished women through a range of informative and network building forums that facilitate the sharing of best practices, critical issues and personal experiences.
