Breaking Taboos
VIEW EVENT DETAILSGender biased taboos in societies persist, resisting change even though some violate the economic, social and cultural rights of women. Denying entry to sacrosanct religious places, menstruation taboos, disapproval of single women living alone in cities, female sexuality, reproductive rights, transgender rights even though guaranteed by the laws of the country get trampled amidst prevailing societal attitudes and beliefs. A list of dos and don’ts are subconsciously cultivated into a woman’s life over the years. Some of these restrictions have been nurtured under the superficial pretext of religion. An essentially patriarchal framework which is based on the dynamics of power where man is the provider and woman is the receiver further hinders women’s empowerment. This programme aims to address taboos faced by women in India, irrespective of class, culture or back ground. Sharing a common stage, our speakers Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, Shikha Makan, Rosalyn D'Mello, Kalyani Joshi and Moderator; Annie Zaidi will address the topic through the lens of their particular field of work, allowing for the complexities of this subject to be explored. Their voices together will target the actions needed, the ways forward, and the many levels of action required to effect change
