The seventh Asia Roundtable was organised on the Taiwan strait crisis and its implications for India, with Aadil Brar (MoFA Fellow, National Chengchi University, Taipei) and Amb. Ashok Kantha (Distinguished Fellow, Vivekananda International Foundation).

The geopolitical tension in the Taiwan Strait has risen over the past three years. Taiwan has become a microcosm of the US-China geopolitical contest. In 2022, the visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi escalated regional tensions as PLA tried to exercise a blockade of Taiwan. For Taiwanese experts, the Russia-Ukraine war has made the threat of a potential invasion by Beijing very 'real'—though the political rhetoric by Zhongnanhai hasn't changed drastically. The upcoming presidential elections in Taiwan will play a central role in charting the course of the Taiwan Strait crisis. The talk attempted to unpack the drivers—domestic and international—of the Taiwan Strait crisis to contextualize the implications for India.
