A Program in Memory of Jeffery A. Bader and David Dollar
The Centre on Contemporary China and the World (CCCW) at The University of Hong Kong and Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) proudly hosted Trans-Pacific Legacies: a program in memory of Dr. Jeffrey A. Bader and Dr. David Dollar on May 21 at ASHK’s Jockey Club Hall in Hong Kong. Dr. Jeffrey A. Bader and Dr. David Dollar were two individuals who dedicated their careers to improving and advancing political and economic relations between China and the United States, making outstanding contributions to the field of China studies and in the lives of many friends and colleagues along the way. As the speakers and panelists paid tribute to these two extraordinary gentlemen, they also engaged in in-depth conversations and exchanges of views on managing US-China strategic and economic relations.
Following opening remarks from Mr. Ronnie C. CHAN, Chairman of Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Professor Y.C. Richard WONG, Chair of Economics and Philip Wong Kennedy Wong Professor in Political Economy, HKU and Professor LI Cheng, ASHK Scholar-in-Residence and professor of political science and founding director of the CCCW at HKU, a short video paid tribute to Dr. Bader and Dr. Dollar and their respective visions for constructive and positive Sino-US relations.
JIN Liqun, President of the Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank, Tao ZHANG, Chief Representative of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Office of Asia and the Pacific and Susan A. THORNTON, retired senior U.S. diplomat, then offered pre-recorded greetings and remembrances of Dr. Bader and Dr. Dollar.
First Panel Discussion:
The first panel discussion concentrated on Dr. Dollar’s area of expertise - China’s economy and US-China economic relations - and featured Dr. Dollar’s friends and former colleagues including Bert HOFMAN of the Asia Society Policy Institute, HUANG Yiping of Peking University, Tao WANG of UBS Investment Bank, XIAO Geng of Peking University HSBC Business School, and Heiwai TANG, of the University of Hong Kong.
Second Panel Discussion:
The second panel discussion featured Dr. Bader’s former colleagues from Washington and former counterparts from China recounting their memories of Dr. Bader’s work and the impact he had on diplomatic relations between the US and China. This panel included touching remembrances from JIA Qingguo, of Peking University, Michael O’HANLON, of Brookings Institution, Dennis WILDER of Georgetown University, XUE Lan, of Tsinghua University and Dali L. YANG of the University of Chicago.
The morning session, a free public event, was wrapped up by Ronnie C. CHAN, and Professor LI Cheng reminding the audience once again that even though Dr. Bader and Dr. Dollar have passed away their work and legacies have given the world a lot to learn in the field of diplomacy, economics, and bilateral relationships.
Following the morning seminar, the speakers and panelists were joined by a small group of guests for a lunch featuring an off-the-record fireside chat between John L. THORNTON, Global Co-Chair of the Asia Society Board of Trustees and Ambassador CUI Tiankai, former Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the United States.
