HOO Mojong (1924-2012), a trailblazer in modern art, stands as a key figure in bridging Eastern and Western artistic languages. As one of the most prominent Chinese female artists following Pan Yu-Lin, she has become a significant representative of Asian modernism in the 20th century.
This Retrospective exhibition takes place during a significant moment: the centenary of Hoo Mojong’s birth. Hoo was born in Shanghai and left her hometown in her early 20s. Her extensive travels and residencies around the world not only enriched her personal experiences but also infused her artistic creations with multicultural inspiration. From Shanghai to Taipei, then to Brazil and Spain, and finally settling in Paris where she created art for 37 years as a painter and printmaker. She returned to China in 1996, museums and institutions throughout China have since celebrated her distinct explorations of bodies and mundane, yet playful, objects. “Objects of Play ” will comprehensively trace her artistic creation with nearly 100 artworks including paintings, prints, drawings, and archival materials from various periods of Hoo’s career, recapping her integration of Chinese and Western art styles and investigations of the spirituality and power of ordinary life.
The exhibition is co-organized by Asia Society Hong Kong Center and Bao Foundation, and co-presented with Mr. Yang Bin & Ms. Yan Qing and Mountain Art Culture and Education Foundation.

賀慕群（1924-2012）是現代藝術領域的先驅，也是連接東西方藝術語言的關鍵人物。作為繼潘玉良之後最傑出的華裔女性藝術家之一，她已成為20世紀亞洲現代主義的重要代表。
此次回顧展正值賀慕群誕辰一百周年的重要時刻。賀慕群祖籍寧波，出生於上海，20多歲時就離開家鄉旅居海外。她廣泛的全球旅居經歷不僅豐富了她的個人閱歷，也為她的藝術創作注入了多元文化的靈感。從上海到臺北，再到巴西、西班牙，最終定居巴黎，她在那裡作為畫家和版畫家創作了37年並在歐洲獲得盛譽。新世紀初，賀慕群重返上海並舉辦一系列美術館及藝術機構重要個展，引起國內藝術界對她的深入研究及廣泛關注。《玩·具：賀慕群百年回顧展》將全面梳理她的藝術創作，展出她不同時期的近100件作品，涵蓋油畫、素描、版畫、及珍貴檔案文獻，回顧她融合中西藝術風格的演變歷程，以及充分展現她獨具一格的藝術哲學：對平凡生活中精神與力量的深刻探索。
本次展覽由亞洲協會香港中心與真寶基金會聯合主辦，由楊濱先生與晏青女士以及山藝術文教基金會聯合呈現。

Opening Symposium
The Opening Symposium for Objects of Play: Hoo Mojong Centennial Retrospective, co-organized by The Art Journal and Bao Foundation, took place on March 25. Ye Ying, Editor-in-Chief of The Art Journal, moderated the event, and the invited speakers included S. Alice Mong, President of Asia Society Hong Kong Center; Valerie Wang, Curator of the exhibition and Director of Bao Foundation; Eric Lefebvre, Director of Cernuschi Museum; and Xiaoyu Weng, Artistic Director of Tanoto Art Foundation and Head of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
During the Q&A session, Ye Ying engaged the speakers with questions that used Hoo Mojong as a starting point to explore the experiences of diasporic Chinese female artists in a global context. The event attracted members of the public, Asia Society’s docents, and visitors in town for Hong Kong Art Week, all of whom celebrated the opening of the fifth installment in the Contemporary Chinese Female Artist Series. Asia Society Hong Kong Center extends its gratitude to The Art Journal and Chanel for their generous support.
