Asia Society Hong Kong x LEE Kuang-Yu Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition
Lee Kuang-Yu’s sculptures are deeply inspired by Eastern philosophy and the aesthetics of landscapes, emphasizing the fusion of the mind and nature. Drawing from the essence of Cubism and Surrealism, he developed his own unique hollowed-out sculptural language—"the open void." Lee excels at integrating his works with public spaces and natural environments, transforming these spaces into extensions of the artworks themselves and allowing the pieces to take on new forms in different settings.
The Asia Society Hong Kong Center, a blend of historical landmarks and contemporary architecture, is surrounded by lush greenery. In this unique setting, nine of Lee’s representative works will be displayed, harmoniously integrating with the surrounding environment. This exhibition not only marks Lee’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Hong Kong, but also signifies the multidimensional intersection of his works with modern architecture and natural environments. The unique atmosphere of the Asia Society Hong Kong Center breathes new life into the artworks, offering the audience a layered and immersive aesthetic experience.

李光裕的雕塑作品源出東方哲學與山水美學,強調心性與自然之交融。他汲取立體主義與超現實主義精粹,形成獨有的鏤空雕塑語言—「開放的虛空」。李光裕擅長以作品與公共空間及自然環境結合,使得展覽場域成為作品之延伸,亦使作品在不同展覽場域煥發新姿。
亞洲協會香港中心揉合古蹟與當代建築,同時環抱於綠意盎然的山林。此次,李光裕的九件代表性作品將於亞洲協會香港中心的獨特空間中展示,與周圍環境達成和諧的交融。本次展覽不僅是李光裕首次在香港舉辦的大型個展,更標誌著藝術家作品在現代建築與自然環境中的多維度交匯。亞洲協會香港中心獨特的氛圍為作品賦予新的生命,為觀眾提供了一場深具層次的美學盛宴。
LEE Kuang-Yu: Sculpting the Void
Born in 1954 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Lee Kuang-Yu’s journey as an artist began with formal sculptural training at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts in the mid-1970s. His pursuit of artistic growth then led him to Spain, where he specialized in Western sculpture techniques and theory under the mentorship of the renowned sculptor Toledo and earned his master's degree.
Lee’s sculptures are deeply inspired by Eastern philosophy and the aesthetics of landscapes, reflecting his belief in the fusion of the mind and nature. Drawing from the essence of Cubism and Surrealism, he developed a distinctive sculptural language that incorporates hollowed-out forms to convey a sense of openness and infinite possibility. At the heart of his artistic language lies the exploration of the "void"—a concept that symbolizes the unification of the object and the self, inviting viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between presence and absence.
The exhibition, co-organized by the ASHK and CHINI Gallery, is set against the backdrop of the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, a space that blends historical landmarks with contemporary architecture, surrounded by lush greenery. In this exceptional environment, Lee’s nine sculptures harmoniously integrate with the landscape, offering a visual dialogue between the art and the setting. Not only does this exhibition mark Lee Kuang-Yu’s first large-scale solo presentation in Hong Kong, but it also highlights the intersection of his works with modern architecture and nature.
Lee Kuang-Yu’s work challenges us to rethink the relationship between space, form, and meaning, inviting us to engage with the unseen and the unexplored. The unique atmosphere of the Asia Society Hong Kong Center breathes new life into the sculptures, offering visitors a rich, layered, and immersive aesthetic experience.
李光裕—雕塑虛空
李光裕,1954年生於台灣高雄,1970年代中期在國立藝術專科學校完成學院雕塑訓練後,負笈西班牙研習西方雕塑技法與理論,師承著名雕塑家托雷多並取得碩士學位。
李光裕的雕塑作品源出東方哲學與山水美學,強調心性與自然之交融。他汲取正宗立體主義與超現實主義精粹,形成獨有的鏤空雕塑語言—「開放的虛空」,這一概念象徵著物體與自我的統一,邀請觀眾思考存在與虛無之間的微妙平衡。
此次展覽由亞洲協會香港中心與采泥藝術共同主辦。亞洲協會香港中心揉合古蹟與當代建築,同時環抱於綠意盎然的都會山林。在這樣的獨特環境中,李光裕的九件雕塑與景觀和諧交融,創造出藝術與空間之間的視覺對話。本次展覽不僅是李光裕首次在香港舉辦的大型個展,更標誌著藝術家作品在現代建築與自然環境中的多維度交匯。

LEE Kuang-Yu
Born in 1954 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Lee Kuang-Yu completed his sculptural training in Taiwan in the mid-1970s before traveling to Spain to study Western sculptural techniques and theories. He studied under sculptor Francisco Toledo and obtained a master's degree. He currently lives and creates in Taipei, Taiwan.
Throughout the development of sculptural art in Taiwan, Lee’s work has transcended cultural and historical dimensions, becoming a cultural coordinate that merges Eastern traditions with Western modernism. His works integrate multiple cultures, shaping a highly distinctive sculptural aesthetic. Rather than filling space with the solid mass structures typical of traditional sculpture, Lee utilizes flat and hollow structures, liberating the sculptures from closed forms and transforming them into "voids." This openness not only breaks the boundaries of observation but also challenges the inherent limits of materials and space. Through contrasts between the real and the unreal, fullness and emptiness, Lee creates spaces filled with tension, while also expressing profound philosophical reflections on life.
Important early exhibitions by Lee include: the 1981 Fall Salón in Spain, the 3rd Asian Art Exhibition at the Fukuoka National Museum of Modern Art in Japan in 1988, the 1995 International Sculpture Craft Workshop Exhibition in Graz, Austria, the 1999 Volume & Form International Sculpture Exhibition in Singapore, his solo exhibition Life, Illusion of Bodies at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in 2011, and the 2014–2015 A Symphonic Concoction: Sculpting Art in Taiwan in the 1980s at the Juming Museum in Taipei.
In 2015, Lee was invited to participate in the 18th edition of OPEN, the International Exhibition of Sculptures and Installations, in Venice. In the same year, three of his works—Empty Procession, Subduing, and Thinker—were also selected for the important group exhibition The Moment–The Taiwanese Art Project in New York, further solidifying his position in the international art scene. In 2017, Lee was invited to have a major solo exhibition, To Have and Have Not, at the San Marino Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The exhibition focused on Lee’s thirty years of sculptural work and artistic achievements, showcasing his unique sculptural aesthetic explorations. In 2018, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts held Space, Poetry, and People: A Retrospective of LEE Kuang-Yu’s Work, showcasing fifty key pieces from his career spanning from 1986 to 2017. In 2020, Lee had a large-scale outdoor solo exhibition, A Sculptor's secret garden-LEE Kuang-Yu, at the Cloud Forest in Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.

在台灣雕塑藝術的進程中,李光裕的創作跨越了文化與歷史的向度,成為東方文化與西方現代主義交融的文化坐標。其作品融匯多元文化,形塑出極富個人特色的雕塑美學。李光裕不以傳統雕塑的團塊結構填滿空間,而是透過片狀與鏤空的結構,使雕塑從封閉的形態中解放,轉化為「開放的虛空」。這種開放性不僅打破了觀看的界限,也挑戰了材料與空間的固有界限。透過虛與實、滿與空之間的對比,李光裕創造出充滿張力的空間,並展現對生命的哲思。
李光裕早期參與的重要展覽包括:1981年西班牙秋季沙龍展、1988年於日本福岡國立現代美術館舉辦的第三屆亞洲國際美術展、1995年於奧地利格拉茲舉辦的國際雕塑研習營聯展,1999年於新加坡舉辦的「Volume & Form」新加坡國際雕塑展、2011年於國立台灣美術館舉辦的「空身幻影—李光裕雕塑個展」,以及2014至2015年在台北朱銘美術館舉辦的「多聲交響—1980年代台灣雕塑探索」等。
2015年,李光裕受邀參加在威尼斯舉辦的第十八屆「OPEN 18. 國際雕塑裝置展」。同年,李光裕的三件作品《空行》、《伏心》和《思惟》也入選美國紐約的聯展「頃刻:台灣當代藝術展」,確立他在國際藝術界的地位。2017年,李光裕受邀於威尼斯雙年展聖馬利諾國家館舉辦大型個展「有無之際」。該展聚焦李光裕三十年來的雕塑創作及其藝術成就,涵蓋其獨具特色的雕塑美學探索。2018年,高雄市立美術館舉辦「空間.詩.人:李光裕創作研究展」,展出李光裕自1986年至2017年期間的五十件代表作品。2020年,李光裕於新加坡濱海灣花園舉辦個人大型戶外雕塑展「李光裕的祕密花園」。
