Chinese-Canadian author Xue Yiwei’s 2014 novel The Empty Nest is one of the most influential Chinese novels of recent years and considered by many critics to be more drama than fiction. Today he explores the intersection between theatre and fiction with Chinese playwright, director, and short story writer Chen Si’an. Moderated by Australian translator, essayist, novelist and sinologist, Linda Jaivin.
CHEN Si’an is a playwright, theatre director, poet, short story writer, and literary translator. She has written four collections of short stories and seven plays. Her plays were performed at the Royal Court Theatre, Edinburgh International Festival, National Theatre Company of China, Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center, Beijing International Fringe Festival, etc. She’s the executive editor of the Wings Poetry, and founder and artistic director of the Sound and Fury Play Reading Festival.
Xue Yiwei receives his BSc in Computer, his MA in Literature, and his PhD in Linguistics. He is an acclaimed author of twenty books, including six novels, six collections of short stories, six collections of essays. His works have been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Swedish and Mongolia, among them, Dr. Bethune’s Children (a novel) and Shenzheners (a collection of short stories) have met with international recognition. He currently lives in Montreal, Canada.
Linda Jaivin is the author of eleven books, including seven novels, and a prolific essayist, cultural commentator as well as a literary translator from Chinese, with a speciality in film subtitling. She has written for the theatre as well. Two of her novels are set in China A Most Immoral Woman (2009) and The Empress Lover (2014). The Monkey and the Dragon (2001) is a biography of friendship with the Taiwan singer-songwriter Hou Dejian and a memoir of the 1980s. She is currently working on The Shortest History of China, to be published in May 2021. She lives in Sydney, Australia.
