On January 30, the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency on the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) that originated in Wuhan, China. Healthcare experts have warned that COVID-19 could rapidly spread, if not properly contained, and many governments around the world have begun to take precautionary measures to ensure public health safety. Amid the international concern and heightened fears about the disease, what is fact and what is fiction? The Asia Society Hong Kong Center brings you regular updates on the coronavirus story in Hong Kong that has reverberations elsewhere in the world. We are pleased to present on-the-ground public health experts and internationally renowned specialists with the latest facts and evidence-based findings regarding this epidemic outbreak. In episode 12, hear from Professor Roberto Bruzzone, Co-Director, HKU-Pasteur Research Pole, School of Public Health, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. S. Professor Roberto Bruzzone, Co-Director, HKU-Pasteur Research Pole, School of Public Health, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong
Prof. Bruzzone was born in Italy and studied medicine at the University “La Sapienza” in Rome. After postdoctoral work at the University of Geneva and Harvard Medical School, he joined in 1995 the Institut Pasteur, where he is a Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Infection. His research has focused for many years on the cell biology of direct cell-cell communication through connexins and their associated human diseases. In 2006, he moved to Hong Kong, where he is the Co-Director of the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole, with a joint appointment as Visiting Professor in the Li Ka Shi Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. Since coming to Hong Kong, his research has shifted to the investigation host-pathogen interactions. He has been decorated as Knight of the National Order of Merit in France and Italy.
