Axel Vervoordt Gallery, a member of Asia Society Hong Kong Center, would like to invite fellow members to a virtual tour of the current exhibition – Bosco Sodi’s A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, follow by a zoom chat with the artist himself. This solo show, which is the first in Hong Kong and the Greater China region, displays new works created during the gallery’s artist residency program by Bosco Sodi (Mexico City, b. 1970). Bosco will be calling in from Greece for a chat with Doris Poon, Associate Curator of Asia Society Hong Kong Center and also you!
In December 2019, he spent two weeks in Hong Kong to create new works specifically exploring the depths and boundaries of the color turquoise. The city’s geography, landscape, energy, and rhythm had an influence on his practice and creation process. The artist states that local life added a unique depth and dimension to his work. Via research, Sodi was particularly touched by the sweeping blue tones in Wang Ximeng’s painting, A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, which the artist borrows as the exhibition’s title in the spirit of its inspiration and impact on his work.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from Bosco Sodi!
About Bosco Sodi
Bosco Sodi is known for bold, richly textured works that burst with colour and materiality. The artist’s visual language transcends conceptual barriers. His paintings, or sculptural objects as the artist himself calls them, appear to be carved from the earth itself. The dense materiality of his work is made by using a combination of raw, monochrome pigments mixed with sawdust, pulp, natural fibres, and glue that are combined layer after layer and allowed to dry, crack, and evolve. Sodi's work is informed by the Wabi-sabi worldview of aesthetics where beauty is expressed in imperfection, transience and simplicity.
