The world is watching closely and eagerly awaiting the outcome of what may be the closest election ever for a US President. Join Asia Society Hong Kong Center and members of the Committee of 100 to hear perspectives on the outcomes of the election and what they expect for the future.
Handel Lee, Washington, DC Regional Chair for the Committee of 100, Patrick Liang, Executive Director for the Cyrus Tang Foundation and Margaret Wong, President and CEO of McWong International Inc., will explore what the outcomes of the election mean for Chinese Americans, what are the implications for US-China relations, and what is the mood and outlook of the American people in this historic moment.
Handel Lee serves as the Washington, DC Regional Chair for the Committee of 100, and is a partner in a global law firm with over 3,000 lawyers and sits on its International Management Committee. Specializing in energy and infrastructure projects, Mr. Lee has garnered recognition as a leading international practitioner in the areas of Energy, Renewable Power, and Project Finance over the past 25 years.
His contributions extend beyond law into the arts and culture. Notable projects include founding KWM Art Center in Beijing (2016), serving as a Senior Advisor for the Hangzhou Urban Constellation (Museum cluster) Project (2009-2013), being co-founder partner of the Beijing Center for the Arts (2008) and the Shanghai Gallery of Art (2004), and founder, developer, and partner in the Legation Quarter/Qianmen23 in Beijing (2008) and Three on the Bund in Shanghai (2004).
For his significant achievements in law and the arts, Handel received several prestigious awards including: Georgetown Law’s Paul R. Dean Award (2008), the Order of the Star of Italy (Commendatore) (2007), Esquire China’s Outstanding Achievement Award, and the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award (2006). He served as the Vice Chair of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and is the Founder and Chair of the Friends of the National Asian Pacific American Museum, aiming to attain authorization and creation of the museum on the National Mall.
Patrick Liang is the Executive Director for the Cyrus Tang Foundation (www.cyrustangfoundation.org) which supports passionate problems solvers to create a more caring society. The Foundation has been active for over 25 years and primarily supports educational causes in China. The Foundation currently has programs in 25 Universities and over 400 Middle/High Schools throughout China and the United States. Since inception, CTF has awarded over 150,000 scholarships and supported over 100 major educational programs and research projects.
Patrick is concurrently the Managing Director-China for Tang Industries Inc. Tang Industries is a US based private diversified conglomerate with activities in the metals, real estate, life sciences, investments, and other industries. In 1998, Patrick was the first employee Tang Industries sent to China and he has been with the firm for over 25 years and now manages both the investment and operations for all of Tang Industries’ activities in China. In the past, he has been General Manager, VP-Operations, VP-Finance and Director-Business Development at various portfolio companies within the Tang organization and he currently serves on the board of several portfolio companies.
Patrick is an Aspen Institute – First Movers Fellow in the class of 2020. His fellowship focus is working with other fellows to develop programs to integrate philanthropy into regular business activities. He is also currently a board member of the 1990 Institute.
Patrick has an MBA with honors from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a BA in Economics and International Studies from Northwestern University. He currently resides in Las Vegas with his wife (Cheryl) and their two children (Isabelle and Ethan).
Margaret Wong is the President/CEO of McWong International Inc, headquartered in California, and an industry leader in design/manufacturing of high-quality lighting control systems and related electrical and electronic components. Her other business investments include U.S./China culinary education, restaurants, wine vineyard, and esports education. Mrs. Wong has over 38 years of experience forged on linking as well as creating multi-million-dollar businesses, built on trade between the U.S. and China. Mrs. Wong’s keen eye for cutting deals, has inspired numerous publications such as the Sacramento Bee, Comstock’s Magazine, and several industry periodicals, to appropriately dub her the “Business Empress!”
Mrs. Wong serves on several of the nation’s top business boards and commissions, including the California Chamber of Commerce, the California Asian Chamber of Commerce, the Asia Board for the Themed Entertainment Association, and as a California Governor’s Appointee to the California Citizens Compensation Commission.
A Hong Kong native, Mrs. Wong received her B.S. degree in Economics and Finance from the University of Hong Kong and immigrated to the U.S. in 1974. Mrs. Wong is a proven entrepreneur known for successes in import/export, manufacturing, investments, technology related to energy efficiency, lighting and AI innovations. Over the years, Mrs. Wong has earned dozens of nationally acclaimed awards, including the prestigious President’s “E” Award and Export Businesswoman of the Year from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency.
