The first weeks of President Trump’s second term have seen a torrent of tariff and other trade and investment policy announcements calling for sweeping reviews of previous US policies and targeting America’s closest and largest trading partners. Where might Trump’s tariffs and his dramatic shifts in US trade policy lead? What do these changes imply for the global economy and the rules-based international order on trade?
Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) is proud to host a fireside chat between Ms. Wendy Cutler, Vice President of the Asia Society Policy Institute and one of the world’s foremost experts on US trade policy, and Ms. Stella Yifan Xie, correspondent for Nikkei Asia. In this conversation, Ms. Cutler will provide her insights and perspectives on discerning the facts from the threats, and where Trump may be heading with his “America First” trade and investment policies.

Wendy Cutler is Vice President at the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) and the managing director of the Washington, D.C. office. In these roles, she focuses on leading initiatives that address challenges related to trade, investment, and innovation, as well as women’s empowerment in Asia. She joined ASPI following an illustrious career of nearly three decades as a diplomat and negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), where she also served as Acting Deputy U.S. Trade Representative. During her USTR career, she worked on a range of bilateral, regional, and multilateral trade negotiations and initiatives, including the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, U.S.-China negotiations, and the WTO Financial Services negotiations. She has published a series of ASPI papers on the Asian trade landscape and serves as a regular media commentator on trade and investment developments in Asia and the world.

Stella Yifan Xie is a correspondent for Nikkei Asia, covering China and Asia economy.
Previously, she spent nearly 9 years with the Wall Street Journal, closely tracking changes in the Chinese economy and capital market. Her coverage included topics such as how Covid-19 reshaped the lives of Chinese citizens, Beijing’s clampdowns on private entrepreneurs, the rise and fall of Jack Ma’s fintech empire and the collapse of China’s housing market bubble.
Together with colleagues, her work has received recognition, including an award from the Overseas Press Club in internal business reporting and a finalist nomination for public service journalism from the Society of Publishers in Asia. She is currently based in Hong Kong.
