The second Trump Administration has returned to an “America First” doctrine in its foreign and economic policies, upending trade agreements, traditional alliances, its role in development aid, and rapidly altering the geopolitical landscape. How are Asian powers viewing US foreign policy, and what might happen next?
Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) is proud to host a luncheon panel discussion featuring Asia Society’s distinguished global trustees and scholars. In this timely discussion, Ambassador Chan Heng Chee, Global Co-Chair of Asia Society, Dr. Kyung-wha Kang, Asia Society Global President and CEO, Dr. Vali R. Nasr, an Asia Society Global Trustee, and Mr. Jing Qian, co-founder and managing director of the Center for China Analysis at the Asia Society Policy Institute, will discuss perspectives from across Asia on Trump’s second term and his re-shaping of the world order.

Chan Heng Chee is Ambassador-at-Large with the Singapore Foreign Ministry and Global Co-Chair of Asia Society. She chairs the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities in the Singapore University of Technology and Design. She is chairman of the National Arts Council, a member of the Presidential Council for Minority Rights, a member of the Constitutional Commission 2016 and Deputy Chairman of the Social Science Research Council. Previously, she was Singapore's Ambassador to the United States and Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Kyung-wha Kang is Asia Society President and Chief Executive Officer (effective April 1, 2024). Dr. Kang is an accomplished diplomat who served as South Korea’s 38th Minister of Foreign Affairs (2017 to 2021)—the first woman to serve in this role in the nation’s history. She previously held key leadership roles at the United Nations and was appointed to senior positions by three consecutive Secretaries-General: as Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights under Kofi Annan, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs under Ban Ki-moon, and Senior Advisor on Policy to António Guterres.
Before joining the UN, Dr. Kang held various positions in the Korean Foreign Ministry. She served as Minister at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the UN, during which she chaired the 48th and 49th sessions of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. She also spearheaded efforts to highlight women with disabilities in drafting the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Dr. Kang holds MA and PhD degrees from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and her doctorate work was in the field of international and intercultural communication. She has served as Distinguished Professor at the Institute for Global Engagement & Empowerment, Yonsei University in Korea.

Vali R. Nasr is the Majid Khadduri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center. He served as the eighth Dean of Johns Hopkins SAIS between 2012 and 2019 and served as Senior Advisor to U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke between 2009 and 2011.
