VIEW EVENT DETAILSLuncheon Presentation by Sandro Galea, Robert A. Knox Professor & Dean, School of Public Health, Boston University
Registration: 12:15pm
Luncheon: 12:30pm
Close: 2:00pm
Today, more than half of the world lives in cities, and there are more people over the age of 65 worldwide than there are children under the age of five. The two most significant demographic shifts worldwide over the past century are population aging and urbanization. How can we create a healthier, if aging, urban population over the next 50 years? Dr. Sandro Galea will highlight strategies and measures to be implemented to capitalize on the opportunities presented by these demographic shifts, while also addressing the challenges that come with these changes, to ensure healthier, productive populations in cities in the years ahead.
Sandro Galea is Robert A. Knox Professor and Dean at Boston University’s School of Public Health. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Galea served as the Anna Cheskis Gelman and Murray Charles Gelman Professor and Department of Epidemiology Chair at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Galea is centrally interested in the social production of health of urban populations, with a focus on the causes of brain disorders, particularly common mood-anxiety disorders and substance abuse. An epidemiologist and physician trained in emergency medicine, he is interested in the consequences of mass trauma and conflict worldwide. Dr. Galea was named one of Time magazine’s epidemiology innovators and listed as one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds for the Social Sciences by Thomson Reuters. He serves on the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and American Epidemiological Society. Dr. Galea has a medical degree from the University of Toronto, and graduate degrees from Harvard University and Columbia University.
