Innovation is something that can be taught, according to Professor Jeanne Liedtka of the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business. With more than 30 years’ experience in the corporate strategy field, she has led design thinking discussions and workshops around the world to help individuals and organizations create a culture of innovation. "A recipe for innovation isn't add genius and stir," says Prof. Liedtka. "Innovation happens when you treat it as an outcome - an outcome that takes effort, expertize and new behaviors and problem-solving skills." Design thinking is a creative problem-solving approach that is human-centered, possibility-focused and hypothesis-driven. It allows managers to investigate challenges that are hard to define, as well as to develop innovative products, processes and business models.

The presentation is for leaders and thinkers who have issues they wish to solve innovatively. How can design thinking help you achieve better results, empower your colleagues, and tap into the innovation potential of people at all organizational levels?

Jeanne M. Liedtka is a faculty member at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business. As the former Chief Learning Officer at United Technologies Corporation, she was responsible for overseeing all activities related to corporate learning and development for the Fortune 50 corporation, including executive education, career development processes, employer-sponsored education and learning portal and web-based activities. At Darden, she previously served as Associate Dean of the MBA program and Executive Director of the Batten Institute. Her passion is exploring how organizations can engage employees at every level in thinking creatively about the design of powerful futures. Her current research focuses on design-led innovation in the government and social sector, as does her forthcoming book, Designing for the Greater Good. She is the author of numerous books including The Catalyst; How You Can Lead Extraordinary Growth and Designing for Growth: A Design Thinking Tool Kit for Managers. Prof. Liedtka received her B.S. from Boston University, M.B.A. from Harvard University and D.B.A. from Boston University.
