Sunday Open Workshop Series
12pm - 6pm
Conducted in Cantonese and English
Suitable for all ages
The Hong Kong Jockey Club presents Life is Only One: Yoshitomo Nara – the first major solo exhibition of the renowned Japanese artist in Hong Kong. The exhibition title comes from one of Nara’s paintings, Life Is Only One! A provocative declaration – but of what? Nara invites Hong Kong visitors to give in to their imaginations and engage in a dialogue with the artist’s work and his world. Through a rich selection of paintings, sketches, photographs, sculptures and mixed-media installations covering a broad range of his oeuvre in the past two decades, the exhibition will present a journey into Nara’s open-ended interpretation of “life.”
This open workshop series welcomes all exhibition visitors to drop in and create their own art work as inspired or in response to the exhibition. The workshops will run every last Sunday of the month during the exhibition period, from 12 noon to 6 pm. Each month’s workshop will be with different themes and art medium. Art materials will be supplied and educators will be present at the studio to provide assistance. Participants are welcome to submit their finished art works to the “Life is Only One-Imagination of Life” art competition.
May Workshop on “Hear What I Say”
Yoshitomo Nara expresses himself better through his art than his words. Words in his works are not an explanation, but an abreaction, a self-cure. From the child holding weapons to defend themselves, to the girl holding up the sign to protest nuclear power, Nara uses his art to speak his point of view.
This workshop will facilitate the visitors to create a painting to express what they want to say out loud to others. Similar to Nara, a short sentence/ narration is added on the drawing to stress on their expression. The art work will be done by acrylic paint on canvas board.
