The evergreen pop icon Usha Uthup, known for her songs in over seventeen Indian and eight international languages, has captivated audiences for generations. In a conversation with Sanjoy K. Roy, she talks about what music means to her and the passion and commitment that drives her. A fascinating sing-along recountal of a unique musical odyssey with a legend of our times.
Usha Uthup is an acclaimed musician whose career began in 1969 at a Chennai nightclub called ‘Nine Gems’ – since then, she has recorded more than a hundred albums. She sings in 17 Indian and 8 foreign languages - in genres from pop to jazz, R&B and classical - in a voice that ranges from contralto to alto. In 2024, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award. She’s been a role model for generations of young Indians and an unwavering ambassador for India’s traditions, with her signature Kanjeevaram sarees and flowers in her hair.
Sanjoy K. Roy is Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 33 festivals in 42 cities and 17 countries, including the world’s largest literary gathering — the Jaipur Literature Festival and international editions of JLF. He is a founder-trustee of Salaam Baalak Trust. Roy is the Co-chair of the Art and Culture Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. He has been conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa by the University of York, UK, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts and society.
