In this evening program, scent artist and botanical fragrance designer Haley Alexander van Oosten will share the story behind the site-specific nature of her work in Asia Society’s current exhibition, To See the Forest and the Trees -- and share specifically how the installation evolved from its original presentation in Shek-O Sublime opened in early 2019 at Hong Kong’s Gallery Exit, curated by local artist and curator Caroline Chiu.
Together in conversation, Haley Alexander van Oosten will discuss her practice with Caroline Chiu in an informal conversation about scent, art and ecology. They will explore the inspiration and creation of the interactive installation, “The Ripening of Mangosteen: A Scent Offering in Fragments” in the current exhibition at Asia Society. Having worked and travelled together for 12 years, they will also highlight the key role of encountering plants in their native environments play in Haley’s creation process, and how the misadventures of “following her nose” have taught her the vital importance of cultivating the ability to perceive nature, our environment, and others with more than just our eyes.
The exhibition is made possible with generous support from Burger Collection, Hong Kong and Boris Yeung and Amy Ng. Additional support is provided by Moiz Zilberman and Pegi and Michael Touff.
