RedBall will be displayed at As Asia Society Hong Kong Center on Dec 11 from 11am to 6pm.
This December, the exciting RedBall Project will be making its debut in the city of Hong Kong, the 48th stop in its global tour. Big, vibrant, and playful, RedBall is a juxtaposition to the everyday that invites viewers to reconsider the surrounding cityscape and infuse it with fresh perspectives. As RedBall makes its stop here at Asia Society Hong Kong Center, we are proud to present an artist talk showcasing the history behind the project, as well as exploring how art interventions can be catalysts to seeing the world in a different light.
Join us in conversation with artist Kurt Perschke and architect (UK) Roger Wu as they explore how art interventions can serve as catalysts for viewing the world anew. A conversation that can inspire and empower art students, art and design aficionados, and architecture enthusiasts, discover the role of public art in a city like Hong Kong. Contemplate the philosophy of public space, and the marriage of art, design, and architecture.
Kurt Perschke created RedBall in 2001, now one of the longest-running temporary public artworks in the world. His award-winning work has led a new generation of artists to think about the sculptural potential of cities, and audiences in public spaces.
RedBall has been performed in over 47 cities and received the prestigious National Award from Americans for the Arts Public Art Network. RedBall has been avidly followed by the media for over 20 years, appearing in countless magazines and television, newspaper and radio outlets. Born in Chicago, Kurt worked in NYC for 15 years, and now lives and works in Asheville, NC.
As an architect qualified in the UK, Roger Wu has worked on international projects located in China, Algeria, Italy, Russia, Turkey, UK, USA, Hong Kong and other cities in China. Between 2014 and 2022, Roger oversaw the revitalisation and operations of Haw Par Music - a centre for cross-culture exchange through music, heritage and the arts based in the former Haw Par Mansion in Tai Hang, Hong Kong. In recent years, Roger has also curated many exhibitions and biennales in London, New York, Eindhoven, Hong Kong, Macau and other cities in China. Roger is currently lecturing in Hong Kong University’s MSc in Conservation and HKU Space’s MA in Art and Cultural Enterprise.
About the RedBall Project:
The RedBall Project by American artist Kurt Perschke is considered the world’s longest-running street artwork, and Hong Kong is thrilled to welcome the internationally renowned public artwork from 6 to 15 December as it introduces newfound wonder into 10 culturally significant locations across the city.
Hong Kong will be the 48th stop on the artwork’s world tour, which began in 2001 and has bounced from Paris to Chicago, London to Tokyo, and earlier this year in Tainan. The highly acclaimed and much-loved public work moves through the city to a new site each day for the public to interact with, creating a short series of art and architectural interventions. The schedule allows everyone to engage with the project and encourages locals and tourists to plan their visit in advance and interact with RedBall.
Hosted as part of BODW in the city, RedBall Hong Kong is a city-wide celebration with local artist crossovers, brand collaborations and event activations inviting people to engage with the project, sparking creativity and imagination across the city. From Hong Kong Island to Kowloon, RedBall wedges itself into local architecture, encouraging participants to think about the cultural and historical significance of these interventions while giving people an opportunity to view locations one might walk past every day with a fresh perspective.
