Gok Dou LIVE by Asia Society Hong Kong Center

Before Print
Stephanie Teng (2020), Moon n°2,2.1,2.2

As therapy, experiment and expression, photography takes form behind the eyes of Stephanie Teng, Kenny X. Li, Fung Ho Yin and Lau Ching Ping. This focused conversation will track their individual practices in contemporary photography taking shape through film, digital, printed paper and open image making. Find out how the boundaries have expanded for the medium.

Stephanie Teng

Stephanie Teng is an artist / photographer born and raised in Hong Kong and received her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Fine Arts from Scripps College, California.
Her work is shaped by her fascination with the human condition - she sees photography as a metaphor for life; an infinite cycle of attempts at self-exploration; a roadmap to a more empathetic way of seeing and being. By capturing the subconscious synchronicities of the psyche and fleeting moments lost to the ephemeralities of life, her creative approach carries a sensitivity towards the nuances of human vulnerability and emotion. Often paired with poetry, installation and sound - she creates immersive experiences beyond the frame that inspire a sense of introspection, empowerment and therapy.

Kenny Li

Kenny X. Li is a photographer, creative director, and founder of YeP YeP, an experimental fashion and art magazine published in Hong Kong.

Fung Ho Yin

FUNG Ho-yin is the founder and Executive Director of Hong Kong Open Printshop.
Together with several imagemakers, Ho-yin established the Hong Kong Open Printshop (HKOP) - the only nonprofit professional printmaking organization in Hong Kong, back in 2000, alongside teaching at the HK PolyU - aiming at enriching the cultural life of the local community, through print & creative art activities. Since then, the HKOP has produced various significant printmaking programmes, including the ‘Hong Kong Graphic Art Fiestas’, ‘Together We Stride’, ‘Pop Up Press’ and ‘The Legendary Pulp’. To have successfully hosted the ‘IMPACT 11’ - international printmaking conference (International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking, Artists, Concepts and Techniques), in Hong Kong during 2021 under the COVID-19 crisis was the major milestone for the art group in recent years.
Recasting and continue researching on traditional Chinese metal movable characters of ‘Hong Kong Type’ discovered in the Netherlands a couple of years ago is another focus of the art group in the preservation and revitalization of local cultural heritage in the coming decade.
Ho-yin had been using photographic imageries as the medium for creating art personally, as well as in promoting art to the communities – local & foreign. One of his recent efforts was to conduct a Cyanotype Workshop to the community and exhibition visitors at the HK House, during the Echigo Tsumari Land Art Festival, in Japan in 2019.
Ho-yin has also served the Hong Kong Graphics Society as executive member from 2000 to 2009 (Vice Chairman from 2000 to 2002); while being a Museum Expert Adviser of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from 2018.

Lau Ching Ping

Lau Ching Ping, lives in Hong Kong. Works on photography, design and education. Chair of HK International Photo Festival. Former co-editor of "Dislocation" photo art magazine. 2013-2014 WYNG Master Award AIR Project Winner. Director of Gallery Z.
