The Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival is known for more than its world class artists and intimate performances. Every year, the Festival also includes an extraordinary Outreach and Education Program designed to inspire both concert goers and music students.
The Outreach & Education Program for the 2016 Festival features an incredible range of events, all free to the public. Asia Society Hong Kong Center is proud to be the Outreach Program Partner, hosting more than ten events in the Miller Theater, including free concerts, conversation with artists, music appreciation lectures, chamber music coaching and instrumental masterclasses.

Leo Phillips studied with Sandor Vegh, Dorothy DeLay and Shmuel Ashkenasi and has since appeared as soloist with many orchestras worldwide. He co-founded the Vellinger Quartet and was Leader of London’s Nash Ensemble. He has toured extensively, appeared at many international music festivals, and has made many acclaimed recordings and broadcasts. He has performed as Leader/Concertmaster of more than thirty world-renowned orchestras including The London Philharmonic, The Chamber Orchestra of Europe and The Hong Kong Philharmonic. As conductor, Leo performs regularly with orchestras in Thailand and several other Asian countries. As teacher and chamber music coach, Leo has enjoyed teaching at many prestigious educational institutions in Europe, The US, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Leo will provide comments for the participants after their performance. |

14:00-15:00 | Listeners Guide to Classical Music by Dr. Maureen Buja (Part 1) |
This two-part lecture will take you through the elements of classical music to help you better understand the music you love. Part 1 of the lecture features the basics of Rhythm, Melody, and Harmony etc. Part 2 of the lecture extends these basics to examine specific works to be played in the Festival and show you how to be an active listener, anticipating the composer’s actions and truly entering into the driving spirit of a work. |

Festival outreach & education artist Leo Phillips will be joined by one of Hong Kong’s best chamber musicians - Warren Lee (piano) for a lovely afternoon interlude featuring three of Mozart’s beloved Violin Sonatas (K. 481, K. 526 and K. 304). |

11:00-13:00 | Chamber Music Coaching 1 with Leo Phillips |
The Chamber Music Coaching workshops combine a performance platform for chamber music players with constructive comments by outreach & education artist Leo Phillips. Each performing group will play one movement of an ensemble work and Leo will provide feedback and coaching for the group. Ideal for those interested in learning more about playing chamber music. |

16:00-17:00 | Talk: Focus on Bartók: Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, Sz. 110 by Dennis Wu | Renowned music expert Dennis Wu will talk about one of the most challenging pieces - Bartók: Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, Sz. 110. It is rarely heard it live in Hong Kong and definitely a difficult piece to put together. The talk will be conducted in Cantonese. |

17:00-19:00 | Double Bass Masterclass with DaXun Zhang | Double bassist DaXun Zhang has earned the highest praise from both critics and audiences alike. Zhang has performed extensively with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble and has appeared as a soloist with prominent orchestras such as the Minnesota Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Lukes, the Tokyo Symphony and the Pacific Symphony. His diverse recital programs consist of repertoire ranging from western classical music to Chinese folk music. A recipient of numerous awards, Zhang holds the distinction of being the youngest artist to win the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition in 2001 as well as the first double bass player to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. In 2007, Zhang was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which confirmed his prominence as a soloist on this unusual instrument. He is currently an Associate Professor of Double Bass at the University of Texas at Austin. Zhang will comment on the performances by the masterclass participants. |

13:00-15:00 | Open Rehearsal: Schubert "Trout" Quintet | Be a fly on the wall and watch how musicians work through a piece of music with a new group of colleagues. Clara-Jumi Kang, Paul Neubauer, Gary Hoffman, DaXun Zhang and Zhang Zuo will rehearse the Schubert "Trout" Quintet, followed by a brief Q&A after the rehearsal. |
16:00-17:30 | Classical Insights: Arensky: Piano Trio | This is a music lecture by renowned music expert, Dennis Wu. The featured piece will be Arensky: Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 32, with musical excerpts performed by Evelyn Chang (piano), Euna Kim (violin) and Laurent Perrin (cello). The piece will be performed by Cho-Liang Lin, Gary Hoffman and Zhang Zuo in the Festival Finale on Wednesday Jan 27th. This talk will be conducted in Cantonese. |
19:00-20:30 | Classical Insights: Dvořák: "American" Quartet | This is a streamed lecture by Dr. Maureen Buja. The featured piece will be Dvóřak: String Quartet No. 12 in F Major Op. 96, “American”, with musical excerpts performed by RTHK Qurtet. The piece will be performed by the Emerson Quartet in the Festival Finale on Wednesday Jan 27th. |
