Ornament As Function

Imminent Domain Designers Workshop Series

Workshop with Nicolas Cheng & Beatrice Brovia, Artists and Designers

Looking at everything from exquisitely tiny jewelry and small objects that enrich our daily lives to large-scale urban architecture, participants at this workshop will discuss poignant examples of how function and the ornamental meet in unexpected ways. The workshop will be both theoretical and hands-on, where attendees explore how ornament and adornment are used to create beauty and value that renders the body and everyday surroundings something truly exceptional. Participants will also engage in conversation and fast-paced assignments that investigate the meaning of ornament in design, craft and art practices, using as a starting point the complex relationship between the decorative and the functional.

Nicolas Cheng has an interdisciplinary background ranging from interior architecture to product design and contemporary art and jewelry. Moving in the grey area where art, design and craft collide, he is passionately interested in creating hybrid languages by crossing boundaries and merging new knowledge, tools and skills. His work also investigates how poetic concepts can merge with different cultures, craft thinking and cutting-edge technologies. His ultimate aim is to pose new challenges that encourage people to think and engage in conversations and ideas exchanges.

Beatrice Brovia is a self-employed artist and designer, and also tutors students in departments of Ädellab/Metallformgivning and of Industrial Design department at Konstfack, Stockholm, Sweden. The most recent of her many shows was Potlàc at Galerie Caroline Van Hoek in Belgium in 2012 and a collaboration with Nicolas Cheng entitled Conversation piece - Façades in Italy in 2011. Beatrice is the recipient of a Project Grant from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee and was awarded the Talente Prize for Design 2010 from Handerwerksmesse, Munich, Germany. She received her MFA in jewelry at Konstfack, Sweden and her BSc in interior architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy.
