About This Workshop
In the 1960s, influenced by the modern ink master Lui Shou Kwan, Irene Chou was keen on seeking new ideas and infiltrated the style of Western abstract expressionism into her ink paintings. Spherical shapes in the oeuvre of Chou represents the “inner self”. She was constantly exploring the harmony of her inner world with the wide expanse of the physical universe; She was trying to capture in her painting the forces originating from her vision of life.
In the 80s and 90s, spheres were widely used by Irene Chou. She completed the spheres with dots one by one, which requires highly concentration. During the process, Chou would forget herself as if her physical being had gone into those spheres.
In this workshop, the educator will talk about spheres and circles in Chinese ink painting, and demonstrate different techniques on drawing spheres and circles with ink.
About Open Studio
The Hong Kong Jockey Club presents A World Within: The Art and Inspiration of Irene Chou as the third instalment in its “20thCentury Chinese Female Artist Series.” Irene Chou is one of the most inventive artists at the forefront of Hong Kong’s New Ink Art Movement. Her visual language starkly different to other ink artists. Chou was remarkable for paving new possibilities in Chinese ink painting through a highly original abstract visual language, and daring in material experimentation with ink and paper.
Sunday Open Studio Series invites visitors to beinspired by the exhibition and create their own art work in response to the works. Open Studio will run on four Sundays during the exhibition period, with each workshop dedicated to different themes. Basic art materials will be supplied and educators will be present to provide assistance. Participants are welcome to submit their finished art works to the Joy of Art: Irene Chou Response Show Art Open-call.
