The bat has been a popular motif in traditional Chinese arts and crafts, as the Chinese word “bat” share the same pronunciation with “good fortune and happiness”. Images of bats can be found in a variety of art works and are often joined with other symbols to create new meanings, some of which are often varied and hidden to those who don’t know where to look. Aiming to offer students in Hong Kong the opportunity to learn about bat motifs in contemporary art, ASHK has joined hands with The School of Creative Media from the City University of Hong Kong to put together a workshop on creating contemporary bat motifs with the use of new media and technology.
The School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong was founded to nurture a new generation of interdisciplinary artists and creative media professionals, and to develop new ideas and technologies for the creative industries in Hong Kong, mainland China, and abroad. Students are trained across disciplines spanning computer science, fine arts, visual design, creative writing, cultural studies and digital technology. The School of Creative Media bridges the boundaries between art and science and helps to integrate the roles of traditional and new media.
Bess, Poo Tsz Ching and Tony, Chan Yau Yi are both students at The School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. Together, they developed the workshop idea “Lucky Bat Wings” that merges computer science and art. “Lucky” has different definitions to different people, and can be represented with different objects. With the guide of Bess and Tony, participants will create their “Lucky Bat Wings” by transmitting data into visual imagery. Final images will be projected onto a wall and photographed with the participant.
