Asia Society Hong Kong Center is delighted to co-present with the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong on the screening of Long Time Running. Premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017, the film was named as First Runner Up for TIFF's People's Choice Award for Documentaries.
Directed by Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier, Long Time Running chronicles the iconic Canadian band’s now-legendary 2016 Man Machine Poem Tour that captured the heart of a nation. Viewers will be given a unique and exclusive perspective into The Tragically Hip’s world through intimate moments, behind-the-scenes and on-stage footage, personal interviews with the band and close friends, as well as reactions from their devoted fans from across Canada.
During the Man Machine Poem Tour, the band announced that lead singer Gord Downie had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The documentary was originally scheduled to air on Canada’s CTV television in November 2017, but following Downie's death on October 17, CTV advanced its premiere.
The Tragically Hip (The Hip) is a Canadian rock band from Kingston, Ontario, currently consisting of guitarist Paul Langlois, guitarist Rob Baker, bassist Gord Sinclair, and drummer Johnny Fay. Lead singer and lyricist Gord Downie died of glioblastoma in 2017. They have released fourteen studio albums, two live albums, one EP, and fifty-four singles. Nine of their albums have reached No. 1 on the Canadian charts. They have received numerous Canadian music awards, including 16 Juno Awards. Their music is best known for themes related to unique and emotional aspects of Canadian life.
