“The beauty of the static nature of art is the space it offers us to muse and peruse.” – Emily Cheng
An artist of Chinese descent living in America, Emily Cheng is inspired by rich and varied sources ranging from Byzantine paintings to Taoist manuscripts - resulting in visually complex and layered compositions. Centered around such themes as the world, wholeness, fragile beauty, and celebration, Cheng will give an introduction to her visual vocabulary, a brief history of her paintings, and how, as an artist of the Chinese diaspora - Asian and the global culture have influenced her work. Having participated in a number of public art projects, Cheng will discuss the nature of community works, the considerations required when creating large scale site specific art, and how intimate and personal theories and observations get transformed into works for the public. Cheng will also share how her rich and meditative work has been recreated into a mosaic for the new Shau Kei Wan MTR station as part of the “art in mtr” initiative.
