Asia Society Hong Kong Center is proud to present a conversation between Dr. Kai-Fu Lee, Chairman and CEO of Sinovation Ventures, one of the world’s leading authorities on artificial intelligence (AI), and Professor Pascale Fung, Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, a renowned expert in the ethical application of AI.
We live in an age when what was once only the subject of science fiction is rapidly becoming scientific reality, raising fears, hopes, and big questions about the future. How will humans, as individuals and in societies, be affected by the application of AI technologies? Will changes lead to greater conflict or greater prosperity? Will AI help to solve our collective challenges, like climate change, or create new ones?

Dr. Kai-Fu Lee is the Chairman and CEO of Sinovation Ventures and President of Sinovation Venture's Artificial Intelligence Institute. Prior to founding Sinovation in 2009, Dr. Lee was the President of Google China and a senior executive at Microsoft, SGI, and Apple. Dr. Lee received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Columbia University, his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, and Honorary Doctorate Degrees from both Carnegie Mellon University and the City University of Hong Kong.
He was the Co-Chair of the Artificial Intelligence Council for the World Economic Forum Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Dr. Lee has been honored as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME Magazine in 2013, one of WIRED’s 25 Icons, Asian Business Leader 2018 by Asia House, and has over 50 million followers on social media. Dr. Lee’s most recent book, written with award-winning science fiction author Chen Qiufan, is AI 2041: Ten Visions for our Future, which explores how AI will shape our future over the next 20 years.

Pascale Fung is a Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST), and a visiting professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. She is an elected Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and an elected Fellow of the International Speech Communication Association. She is the Director of HKUST Centre for AI Research (CAiRE), an interdisciplinary research centre on top of all four schools at HKUST. She co-founded the Human Language Technology Center (HLTC). She is an affiliated faculty with the Robotics Institute and the Big Data Institute at HKUST. She is the founding chair of the Women Faculty Association at HKUST. She is an expert on the Global Future Council, a think tank for the World Economic Forum. She represents HKUST at the Partnership on AI to Benefit People and Society. She is on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. She is a member of the IEEE Working Group to develop an IEEE standard - Recommended Practice for Organizational Governance of Artificial Intelligence.
