As Henry Kissinger's authorized biographer, Niall Ferguson has had unprecedented access to the former Secretary of State's private papers and dozens of other archives. In this lecture, he sheds new light on the most important strategic achievement of Mr. Kissinger's career: the 1972 "opening to China" that brought President Richard Nixon to meet Chairman Mao Zedong in Beijing. This, Professor Ferguson argues, was the birth of "Chimerica" - that symbiotic relationship between the United States and the People's Republic that would fundamentally change the global balance of economic and political power over the next four decades. But what were the origins of this crucial shift?
Niall Ferguson is Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University and Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University. Professor Ferguson is the author of 14 books, including “The Pity of War: Explaining World War One” and “The World’s Banker: The History of the House of Rothschild”. The latter won the Wadsworth Prize for Business History and was also short-listed for the Jewish Quarterly/Wingate Literary Award and the American National Jewish Book Award. He is currently writing a life of Henry Kissinger, the first volume of which - “Kissinger, 1923-1968: The Idealist” - has just been published to critical acclaim. Professor Ferguson is also an award-making filmmaker, having won an international Emmy for his PBS series “The Ascent of Money”. His many other prizes include the Benjamin Franklin Prize for Public Service, the Hayek Prize for Lifetime Achievement and the Ludwig Erhard Prize for Economic Journalism. In addition to writing a weekly column for the Sunday Times and the Boston Globe, he is Founder and Managing Director of Greenmantle LLC, a Cambridge-based advisory firm.
