VIEW EVENT DETAILSOff-the-Record Dinner with Dr. Nicholas R. Lardy, Anthony M. Solomon Senior Fellow, Peterson Institute for International Economics
Reception 6:30pm,
Dinner Discussion 7:00pm,
Close 9:00pm
You are cordially invited to attend a President’s Circle dinner discussion with Dr. Nicholas R. Lardy, Anthony M. Solomon Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics on the fundamentals of Chinese economic growth. Recent negative commentary on the Chinese economy, which focuses on declining industrial growth, mostly fails to recognize that for the last three years services have become the major driver of China’s growth. Dr. Lardy will explain the factors underlying this transformation and assess its sustainability. He will also examine the question of China’s potential growth over the medium term. Will China be caught in the so called middle income trap, with growth averaging in the low single digits or can additional reforms lead to medium term growth in the range of six to eight percent?
Nicholas R. Lardy is the Anthony M. Solomon Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and an expert on the Chinese economy. Prior to this, he was a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and Director of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. He was also the Frederick Frank Adjunct Professor of International Trade and Finance at the Yale University School of Management. As a leading expert of the field, Dr. Lardy has written many publications on the Chinese economy. His most recent books are, Markets over Mao: The Rise of Private Business in China (2014) and Sustaining China's Economic Growth after the Global Financial Crisis (2012). Dr. Lardy is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the editorial boards of Asia Policy and the China Review. He received his BA from the University of Wisconsin and his PhD from the University of Michigan, both in economics.
President’s Circle dinners are off-the-record and kept small to facilitate greater discussion.
