Collage from Shahzia Sikander’s animation
Shahzia Sikander: Apparatus of Power, is the first major solo presentation of the renowned artist in Hong Kong. Shahzia Sikander took up the craft-based practice of miniature painting in Pakistan and has continuously challenged its potential to communicate in multiple contexts and formats. Two digital animations from the exhibition are composed by hundreds of paintings done by Sikander. She analyses and manipulates them with computer software. Original images are fractured, enlarged, or overlapped so that new meaning and story iscreated.
Gold Leaf
Besides animations, gold leaf is also used by Sikander in her painting, like Singing Sphere (2012-2015). In fact, gold leaf is a material that is commonly used in text illumination in South Asian Miniature Paintings and decoration for the borders. Gold leaf is also used to embellish clothing and jewellary in the paintings.
Workshop with collage and gold leaf
This workshop allow participants to combine both techniques to create an artwork. Participants will play with printed images and drawings they make in the class by fracturing, overlapping and putting them together to create a new artwork. Then, by the lead of educator, they will learn some basic skills using gold leaf gliding to embellish their work.
Workshop Objective
In this workshop, besides creating artwork with various collage techniques, participants will have the opportunity to try gold leaf gliding, a very delicate and professional technique.
