To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Asia Society Hong Kong Center is proud to offer a presentation by Ms. Pnina Shor, a retired archaeologist from the Israel Antiquities Authority and a world-renowned expert in the Dead Sea Scrolls.  In conversation with Asia Society Chairman Mr. Ronnie C. Chan, Ms. Shor will provide a comprehensive overview of the Dead Sea Scrolls, including their significance, preservation, accessibility, and the science involved in their conservation and research.

Pnina Shor

Pnina Shor retired from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) in September 2020 after 43 years of a manifold archaeological career.  In May 2010 Pnina established and became head of an IAA unit dedicated solely to the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) – their curatorship, conservation, exhibition, and first and foremost their digitization. For the preceding 15 years, Pnina was head of the Department for the Treatment and Conservation of Artifacts at the IAA. Among her responsibilities were the conservation laboratories of pottery, glass, stone, organic materials, and metal artifacts, and the unique conservation laboratory dedicated to the conservation, preservation, and exhibition of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Pnina worked for the IAA throughout her archaeological career - beginning as a field archaeologist, continuing with the scientific aspects of the processing of material towards its scientific publication, and being involved in the publication and curation of the artifacts. When appointed head of the Conservation Department of Artifacts, Pnina also partook in an ICCROM course about the scientific principles of archaeological conservation and preservation.

In 2020, Pnina was awarded an Honorary Ph.D. from Göttingen University, Germany for her exceptional achievements in preserving the DSS for future generations and providing their accessibility to the scholarly community all over the world as well as to the public worldwide.

Ronnie C. Chan

Ronnie C. Chan (Moderator) is the Chair of Hang Lung Group Limited and its subsidiary Hang Lung Properties Limited, both publicly listed in Hong Kong. Hang Lung expanded into mainland China in 1992, developing, owning and managing world-class commercial complexes in key tier one and tier two cities.
