Henry Steiner has shaped the graphic design landscape of Hong Kong since the 1960s. He was responsible for creating visual identity systems for HSBC and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, among others, which form part of Hong Kong’s character and resonate way beyond its borders.
While Henry has been honored with an exhibition at M+ museum, one lesser-known trait is his hobby of collecting and his interest in visual arts. This talk intends to discuss a selection of Henry’s collections while building a bridge to his designs to understand the influence art might have had on his creative process.
Henry Steiner is an internationally acclaimed graphic designer known as the “Father of Hong Kong Graphic Design”, a title gained for his work on the visual identities of renowned Hong Kong based companies such as HSBC, Hongkong Land, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Trained at Yale under Paul Rand, Steiner moved to Hong Kong in 1961 to launch The Asia Magazine. Throughout his career, he has helped create relevant identities for the flourishing mixed culture of Hong Kong by incorporating Eastern symbolism into Western graphic design. Steiner continues to work and employ a cross-cultural graphic language in his designs till this day.
Dr. Christina Bartosch (moderator) is an internationally educated and experienced art historian, specialized in European art of the early 20th century and exhibition history. After studying in Paris, London and Vienna, she initiated and contributed to various small and large-scale exhibition and research projects in Austria and Italy. Having worked on several archival projects, she has a strong interest in Cultural Heritage care. In that vein, she founded Recollect Art Care in Vienna, offering a wide range of collection management services to private art collectors and estates. Since bringing the company to Hong Kong in 2022, she has expanded her client base to include public and private institutions.
