DanceAbility International’s mission is to dissolve barriers and connect people with and without disabilities through dance and movement. This mission is accomplished through classes, workshops and events for adults and children, performances, teacher training and educational materials for teachers of inclusive dance. The methodology, codified by Alito Alessi over the last 30 years, is a highly developed approach to inclusive facilitation and arose from decades of working with people across the spectrum of human ability.
This presentation will inform audiences about the DanceAbility method, its applications, and the global effect of the over 700 Certified Teachers who implement concepts from DanceAbility in their own communities.
Ailto Alessi has been involved with the evolution of contemporary dance for the past 30 years, and is internationally known as a pioneering teacher, choreographer, and mentor. Alessi’s work is supported by both Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships, as well as choreographer’s fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Oregon Arts Commission. DanceAbility International has been under Alito’s leadership since 1989 and is headquartered in Eugene, Oregon. It has performed throughout the world, receiving local, national and international recognition.
