What is the role of design in contemporary society? As urban citizens, how are our surroundings impacting our way of living and seeing the world?
Some have argued that technological advancements have been detrimental to human-centered design, as it contributes to the increasing mechanization and aesthetic monotony of our landscapes. What, then, is the humanistic approach, and how can we reconcile its ideas with the way we live?
A comprehensive review spanning Heatherwick Studio’s 30-year history, Thomas Heatherwick: Making showcases the studio’s impressive portfolio – from expansive multi-use complexes to unconventional furniture – and dives into the process behind its hands-on approach to design.
Join Asia Society Hong Kong Center to hear from designer Thomas Heatherwick in conversation with Pixie B co-founder Jo Lusby about his philosophy as a designer and maker, the extraordinary designs from Heatherwick Studio, as well as their perspectives on how design will evolve from here.
Thomas Heatherwick is one of the world’s most renowned designers, whose varied work over two decades is characterised by its originality, inventiveness and humanity.
He founded his studio in 1994 to bring together architecture, urban planning, product design and interiors into a single creative workspace. Led by human experience rather than any fixed dogma, the studio is dedicated to making the physical world more joyful and engaging.
Some of the studio’s designs include London’s Routemaster bus; the 2012 Olympic Cauldron; Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross; Google Bay View (in collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group), Little Island, Bund Finance Centre, Pacific Place, TianAn 1000 Trees, Xi’an CCBD and others.
Jo Lusby is co-founder of Pixie B, an IP management and strategy agency specialising in China and the wider Asia region. A publishing industry veteran, Jo has managed major client projects for brands including Chinese sci-fi franchise The Three Body Problem, DC Comics Batman, Harry Potter digital publisher Pottermore, and many more.
A fluent Mandarin speaker, Jo was previously North Asia head of the world’s largest trade publisher, Penguin Random House (2005-2017), where she managed the region’s largest English language trade book sales portfolio and acquired and published books in Chinese, Korean and English including Nobel Laureate Mo Yan, tennis sensation Li Na, and global children’s bestseller Peppa Pig.
Jo is Chair of the Creative and Retail Committee for the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and governing board member for the China Media Project. Previously co-chair and board member of the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, Jo continues to serve as an Advisor. Jo has lived in Asia since 1995.
