In The Art of Understanding Art: A New Perspective, art expert and artist Hugh Moss presents a refreshingly original and thought-provoking theory of art that is stimulating for students, reassuring for non-expert art collectors, and global in its breadth with insights into eastern as well as western art. The author aims to help everyone enjoy art and feel more confident in their judgments about it. In a discussion with established curator Tobias Berger, they explore whether much of accepted thinking about art is the result of intellectual tyranny and whether the combination of intellect and reason with the transcendental side of consciousness will allow one to fully appreciate a work of art.
Hugh Moss ran a gallery specializing in Asian art in London's West End before moving to Hong Kong in the 1970s. In the 1980s he represented some of China's leading artists, and took up painting himself, becoming an accomplished artist. An acknowledged expert in Chinese snuff bottles, scholarly works of art and modern paintings, he has worked closely with the world's leading auction houses for over fifty years.
Tobias Berger was a curator at the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel until the end of 2001. In 2002, Berger was the Artistic Director of the 8th Baltic Triennial of International Art in Vilnius, Lithuania. From 2003 to March 2005, he acted as Director of ARTSPACE/NZ in Auckland and from April 2005 to December 2008 as Executive Director of Para/Site Art Space, Hong Kong. He then worked until 2010 as Chief Curator at the Nam June Paik Art Center in Seoul, South Korea before joining M+, Hong Kong as Curator, Visual Arts until 2015. Since then, he has been with Tai Kwun, a new art and heritage revitalization project in Central, Hong Kong, as Head of Arts.
