Launched in 1999, the Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival (HKJFF) was the first ever festival of its kind in Asia. This year, the theme celebrates the 18th Anniversary of the festival. Asia Society Hong Kong Center continues to co-present with HKJFF a selection of world-class films with a diverse range of topics and Asian premieres.

The selection this year includes an array of films that reflect this upbeat theme, particularly the opening night drama On the Map, a fast-moving and spirited documentary that recounts how an underdog Israeli basketball team prevailed over a series of European basketball powers in 1977 and became national heroes. Other highlighted films include: a moving documentary set during WWII Above the Drowning Sea that considers post-war trauma, excellent films from Israel such as The Ambassador’s Wife, the riveting thriller A Quiet Heart, which touches on the complexities of the religious or secular divide in Israel, the entertaining documentary Let’s Dance, Harmonia, a powerful contemporary adaptation of the biblical story, and five selected shorts with a mix of sad, funny, dramatic, and satirical stories to showcase up-and-coming film talents.
