NCLC 2023 is excited to partner with CLASS, NYU, and NCSSFL to offer two workshops for our conference attendees. Join us at a career development workshop to reignite your growth and develop your career, and a pedagogy workshop to boost critical thinking in Chinese class on April 28.

The two high-quality Educators' Workshops are now INCLUDED in your ticket at NO ADDITIONAL COST – making this year's conference more accessible and valuable than ever before!

Career Development Workshop
You’re here: now what? Reigniting the spark and reinvigorating your career

Date and Time: Friday, April 28 from 2:30-3:30 pm ET
Location: Asia Society (725 Park Ave, New York, NY 10021)

As the field of Chinese language teaching evolves and integrates with the wider field of education, there is a need for culturally responsive teachers and leaders to strengthen the field at school, regional, national and international levels. In this workshop, we will gain inspiration from the career stories of veteran field leaders, and help participants to identify personal strengths and skills and potential paths to leadership. Join with peers to reflect, reignite passion for teaching and reinvigorate your career.

Presenters:

  • Michèle Braud, Louisiana Department of Education; National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL)
  • Robin Harvey, New York University
  • Ying Jin, Fremont Union High School District, CA
  • Yuezhou Jin, New Utrecht High School, NY
  • Lynn Lin, Friends Seminary, NY
  • Frank Lixing Tang, New York University

Pedagogy Workshop
Boost Critical Thinking in Chinese Language Classes

Date and Time: Friday, April 28 from 3:40-4:40 pm ET
Location: Asia Society (725 Park Ave, New York, NY 10021)

Integrating higher order thinking skills (HOTS) into language learning cultivates key skills for 21st Century success. Not only should Chinese language classrooms be the posits of verbs, vocabulary, and conversations about daily lives, they should also foster students’ critical thinking skills. In this interactive workshop, you will learn strategies to integrate HOTS into instruction employing authentic materials and questioning techniques. Participants will practice and share techniques that encourage students to think more deeply, even at the introductory level.

Presenters:

  • Yu-Lan Lin: CLASS, Boston Public Schools (retired), MA
  • Baocai Jia: CLASS, Fremont Union High School District (retired), CA
  • Carol Chen-Lin: CLASS, Choate Rosemary Hall School, CT
  • Lucy Chu Lee: CLASS, Seton Hall Preparatory School, NJ
