Serves approximately 4,200 students in Kindergarten through grade 12, in 7 schools.
Logansport Community School Corporation (LCSC) is located in Logansport, IN, and serves approximately 4,200 students in Kindergarten through grade 12. Diversity is a large part of LCSC; 62% of the students receive free or reduced-priced meals, and 51% of the students are learning English. Diversity throughout the schools allows students to be involved with real-world demographics while in a small-school setting.
LCSC offers a world language program in junior high, both dual credit and non-dual credit world language classes at Logansport High School, and a strong Chinese sister school program in which all 7 of the schools have a sister school. In junior high school and high school, students can enroll in Spanish and Chinese courses. Because of the offerings and demographics at LCSC, many students who graduate from Logansport High School are trilingual, well prepared for life after high school, and on a pathway to success.
The Chinese program was established in the fall of 2012 at Logansport High School. With the support of strong leadership from the administrative team, the Chinese program grew quickly, and in 2016, a second Chinese instructor was recruited. Currently, there are over 200 students across 12 classes taking Chinese 1–4 courses with two teachers, Lin Laoshi and Guan Laoshi, who are highly qualified native Mandarin speakers and create an authentic learning culture for students. In addition, Loganport High School Chinese teachers, Mrs. LaFaure and Ms. Guan, are very active in participating in professional communities and conferences locally, regionally, and nationally.
Logansport High School
The principal of Logansport High School, Matt Jones, has worked extremely hard to expand the programs through the implementation of Early College for all of the world language courses as well as the Multilingual Certificate, which has helped increase the number of students enrolled in these courses. The support of Mr. Jones helps make new experiences for students possible, such as Chinese cooking classes, field trips to the International Festival in Indianapolis, and the Foreign Language Quiz Bowl Competition. Logansport High School works with the National Chinese Honor Society and Dual Credit Chinese program at Ball State University. In the second year that members of the Logansport Chapter of National Chinese Honor Society were selected, our students Karen Nieves, Lindsey Hill, and Litzy Galvan Castillo earned the second and third place awards in the Competition of the 2018 Indiana Chinese Language and Culture Fair.
Chinese Sister School Program
Dongyang Experimental Primary School is an advanced primary school in Zhejiang Province. The school has 36 classes and serves 1,843 students. Through the Chinese Sister School program, several LCSC educators and students have visited China to learn about modernized education and technology, Chinese language and culture, and to meet students from our sister schools. Students and staff from Dongyang Experimental Primary School travel to the United States and visit a variety of schools. While in Logansport visiting Logansport School Corporation, students and staff are housed with members of our community and spend time learning about education and traditions in the U.S. and engage in activities within Cass County, such as visiting local parks and eateries. Students at LCSC and Dongyang Experimental Primary School communicate throughout the school year through a pen pal program. This program has been extremely beneficial to our students and staff, creating lifelong partnerships and learning about cultural diversity.
Strong Opportunities for Students
While we are not a large school corporation, we have many offerings that can be found in the largest school corporations across the state of Indiana, because our focus is on what is in the best interest of our students over the long term. We strive to give students every opportunity that we can while they are with us! Logansport Community School Corporation looks forward to the future and to the growth of our Chinese language programs.
