Ambassador Jagat Mehta, in conversation with Ambassador Rajendra Abhyankar, presents his views on Indian leaders and their policies towards other countries, which have shaped domestic and international affairs since India's independence. Our speakers will discuss Mehta's reflections on Indian diplomacy and development and their relevance today.
Jagat Mehta joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1947. He has been Charge d'affaires in China, High Commissioner to Tanzania, and has launched the Foreign Ministry's Policy Planning Division. He was Foreign Secretary from 1976 to 1979. He has led negotiations on many crucial issues, including the Sino-Indian boundary question and India-Pakistan relations. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan Award in 2002. Rajendra Abhyankar was the Indian Secretary of External Affairs from 2001-2004 and has served as the Indian Ambassador to the EU, Belgium and Luxemburg, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Syria, and Cyprus. He was also the Consul General of India in San Francisco, California.
