Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Jose W. Fernandez’s February trip to Southeast Asia heralded new possibilities for economic engagement in the region. On March 8, join Asia Society for a briefing by Assistant Secretary Fernandez on his visits to the Philippines, Burma, Thailand and Singapore.
In this off-the-record Asia Society Policy Briefing Conference Call, Assistant Secretary Fernandez will discuss the key takeaways from his recent trip and will take questions from participants.
During his nine day trip, the Assistant Secretary met with Philippine Government officials and private sector representatives to discuss trade, agricultural biotechnology, anti-corruption and corporate social responsibility. He then traveled to Burma to meet with government officials and business leaders regarding expanding economic relations. The Assistant Secretary also spoke with government officials and business representatives in Thailand, and ended his trip with a visit to Singapore focused on trade, investment and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Mr. Fernandez has served as the Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs since December 2009. He previously served as a partner in the New York office of Latham & Watkins, and Global Chair of the firm's Latin America practice.
