What do you think is going on in the deserts of China?

On Sunday, Gizmodo published a story entitled, "Why Is China Building These Gigantic Structures In the Middle of the Desert?" It seems to have struck a nerve. The post has been viewed more than 1.4 million times and has attracted more than 500 comments and some 30,000 likes on Facebook. No doubt at least 17 related movie scripts are now being shopped to Hollywood producers.

Some in the traditional media have tried to make sense of the mysterious patterns in the desert, and others have bandied about wild guesses on Twitter. We've included some of our favorites below.
