Asia Society on PBS: How to fix America’s education system?
Asia Society President Vishakha Desai was one of six experts interviewed recently for a segment on PBS's weekly Need to Know program. As part of the show's "Fixing America" series, the interviewees were asked the following question: What would you do to fix America’s education system?
The following are Desai's comments, and you can watch the video below.
I feel that actually in the school systems it's not just about math and science, it's really about cultural literacy. And it worries me that in this country we seem to have lost that confidence to be open to the world and work with the world, engage with the world, and that is something we really have to get back into our system. We need to partner with Asia. Rather than worrying that they are going to take over or take our jobs, we need to figure out how we are going to be globally competent and globally literate.
