What are the marks of strong leadership when it comes to responding to crisis?
The global events of 2020 have proven the value of effective and coordinated governance in defusing public panic. As Australia’s bushfires bled into a global health pandemic, our initial response was of overwhelming cooperation. At nearly the 6-month mark however, fractures are starting to appear as we balance different realities with contrasting leadership styles across the country. Globally, we see a similar balancing act playing out.
Steering these leaders’ responses, political and ministerial advisors across state and non-state jurisdictions have become an increasingly important source of expertise, action, and ideas, driving new public policies in largely unforeseen territory. Chiefs of staff - those closest to our leaders – have arguably the most challenging job of all in balancing the realities of government with the personal and political drivers of our leaders. So how do public servants, academics, civil society, and business navigate these challenges and continue to communicate advice, criticism, and feedback in such unprecedented times?
Asia Society Australia warmly invites you to a Gen A masterclass with our board director, experienced senior executive, public affairs specialist, and former Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, David Epstein FAICD. With experience across government, industry and non-profit sectors, and a superb knowledge of Asian and Australian business and politics, join us as we unpack some of the dos and don’ts of political and corporate leadership when it comes to responding to crisis and sustaining public trust.
