[WEBCAST] Executive Briefing | An Update from Myanmar with H.E. Andrea Faulkner and Melissa Crouch
VIEW EVENT DETAILSHow has the pandemic reinforced existing challenges in Myanmar and how has it impacted the country’s economy?
How will the government guarantee safe, fair, and free elections in the midst of a worsening COVID-19 crisis?
Asia Society Australia warmly invites you to a private briefing with H.E. Andrea Faulkner, Ambassador to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in conversation with Melissa Crouch, Associate Professor and Associate Dean Research, UNSW Law School. While Myanmar maintained some of the region’s lowest case counts until August, the country is now struggling to contain a virulent second wave. Myanmar’s poor health care system is overwhelmed by the pandemic and ongoing internet bans prevent health guidelines from reaching conflict-affected parts of Myanmar.
This raises questions about the viability of the country’s general elections, scheduled for 8 November. With COVID-19 restrictions barring political parties from campaigning, the upcoming elections will be a test of Myanmar’s democracy and economic and social development.
Join us as we discuss how Myanmar has reacted to COVID-19 and how the virus is impacting the country’s economy, political stability, and Australia’s ability to do business in the country.
Date: Wednesday 4 November 2020
Time: 3:00 – 3:45 p.m. AEDT
