This Masterclass series ‘The House of’ will introduce you to the personalities leading some of Asia’s biggest economies and the domestic political drivers influencing how they act on the world stage. Over the course of this series, we will be looking at Xi, Abe, Jokowi, Modi, Moon and Kim.
Kicking off the series is China and 'The House of Xi Jinping', delivered by world-class China expert, Dr Bates Gill.
A deep dive into Chinese domestic politics. Understand who the players are, the significance of Xi Jinping's recent abolishment of term limits, what the main concerns and influences are domestically, and how these domestic drivers are influencing China’s actions on the world stage.

About the speaker:
Dr Bates Gill has a 30-year international career as an educator, scholar, and policy advisor. An academically-trained and internationally-respected China specialist, he has led a global top-ten think tank and held academic and research positions at world-leading universities and public policy research institutions in the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific.
Before joining the Security Studies Department at Macquarie University, Dr Gill held positions at the Australian National University and the University of Sydney (2012-2017). He was Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)(2007-2012) and held the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C (2002-2007). He also served as a Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies and inaugural Director of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution (1998-2002).
Among his international honours, Dr Gill holds the Royal Order of the Commander of the Polar Star, the highest award bestowed upon foreigners by the Swedish monarch. In 2015, he was named a top-ten American China expert by the Chinese Foreign Affairs University. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was inducted in to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars in 2007.
Dr Gill's work has resulted in more than 200 publications and research-related travel to more than 50 countries. He has consulted for corporations, government agencies, and philanthropic organisations, and has lectured widely and provided U.S. Congressional and other parliamentary testimony related to Asian and global affairs.
Dr Gill is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and an Associate Fellow with the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House, London), serves on the board of the Rajaratnam School of International Studies (Singapore), on the International Council of Advisors for the Shanghai Institutes of International Studies, and is a Senior Associate with Pacific Forum CSIS in Honolulu. He is on the Editorial Board of China Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary China, and Security Challenges. In 2016, he was appointed as the Sir Howard Kippenberger Chair in Strategic Studies at Victoria University, in Wellington, New Zealand, a visiting professorship he held in August and September that year.
Dr Gill received his Ph.D. in Foreign Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson Department of Government and Foreign Affairs, University of Virginia. He has lived three years in China and Taiwan, ten years in Europe (France, Sweden, Switzerland), and five years in Australia. Dr Gill speaks, reads, and writes in Chinese, English, and French, and has learned basic Swedish.

It aims to give our young leaders access to leading business, policy, trade, diversity and cultural thinkers on Asia, through a series of masterclasses that draw on their industry and personal experience working with and in Asia.
