The Economist | Australia’s Asian Future Summit 2016
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAsia Society is proud to support a signature event on Australia's future in the dynamic Asia, presented by the Economist
Asia Society Australia is proud to be a supporting partner of the Australia’s Asian Future Summit presented by The Economist. We invite you to join us at the premier forum to discuss Australia’s future in the dynamic Asia-Pacific region.
A one-day conference will examine Asia’s rapidly changing economies and explore what these changes mean for Australian businesses. What should Australia’s post-boom economy look like? What needs to happen to get there?
One commonly suggested solution to the end of the mining boom is to boost service exports into Asia. Australia’s financial, professional and legal services industries are certainly sophisticated, but local competitors in many parts of Asia are rapidly closing the gap—or have already closed it. What will Asia’s middle class look like in 5, 10 and 20 years’ time? What are the opportunities and the pitfalls for Australian businesses trying to tap into this growing market?
Australia is contemplating a future where China may not be its dominant trading partner, but one of many. Who will those partners be, as Asia’s middle class grows? Australia wants to position itself as a leading exporter of services to the region; what obstacles will it need to overcome? What opportunities are there for agriculture as Asian populations become richer and demand higher-quality goods? Can Australian firms tap into the region’s digital revolution? What impact the slowdown in commodities will have on Australia is a contentious question. But the changing structure of Asia’s economies means that regardless of its economic performance, Australia will have to radically rethink how it relates to its neighbours. Will Asia’s future be Australia’s too?
The Australia’s Asian Future Summit will convene more than 180 policymakers, business leaders and academia for a timely discussion on the opportunities and challenges that Australia will face as Asia’s economies shift gears.
