Asia Society Southern California Celebrates Visionaries, First Responders, and Cultural Icons at 2025 Annual Gala
LOS ANGELES, CA; May 4, 2025 – Asia Society Southern California (ASSC) today welcomes guests to its 2025 Annual Gala Dinner, an inspiring evening that brings together global leaders and changemakers to honor excellence in innovation, culture, service, and social impact.
This year’s Gala spotlights a remarkable group of honorees whose achievements span industries and continents:
• Joe Kiani, founder of Masimo and CEO of Willow Laboratories, receives the Med Tech Visionary award for his groundbreaking contributions to patient safety and medical innovation through both cutting-edge technology and his leadership at the Patient Safety Movement Foundation.
• Mickey (Hiroshi) Mikitani, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Rakuten Group, accepts the Business Visionary award virtually from Japan in recognition of his transformational role in shaping Japan’s digital economy and empowering small businesses globally.
• Connie Chung Joe, CEO of Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL), is honored as Social Justice Visionary for her powerful advocacy and steadfast commitment to civil rights and community empowerment.
• HBO’s The White Lotus: Season 3 celebrates the global impact of storytelling with the Cultural Visionary award. The series showcases Thailand’s rich cultural tapestry and stunning landscapes while provoking dialogue through its unique social satire. Accepting on behalf of the production are Praya Lundberg, Dom Hetrakul, and Tayme Thapthimthong.
As 2025 brings both breakthrough innovations and profound challenges, the Gala also recognizes the unwavering courage of those who serve in times of crisis. In response to the devastating wildfires that affected Greater Los Angeles in January, the program includes a Tribute to First Responders and Aid Organizations. The heartfelt segment includes a short film presented by JM Eagle and on-stage recognition of the individuals and teams who lead rescue and relief efforts, including:
• Captain Tommy Kitahata (Los Angeles City Fire Department)
• Deputy Chief Albert Yanagisawa (Los Angeles County Fire Department)
• Fire Engineer Chien Yu (Pasadena Fire Department)
• Joanne Nowlin, CEO of the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region
Their dedication, bravery, and service exemplify the strength and spirit of our community.
Adding to the evening’s highlights, Puka Nacua, breakout wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, accepts the Rising Star Award via video for his meteoric rise in the NFL and his positive influence on youth and fans alike.
Returning as emcee is beloved actor and longtime ASSC supporter Kara Wang, guiding the evening’s program with warmth and charisma.
“This Gala is more than a celebration—it’s a testament to the spirit, resilience, and leadership within our global and local communities,” says Brian Treiger, Vice Chairman and Gala Chair of Asia Society Southern California. “Tonight, we honor those shaping a better future—and those who protect it.”
