May 18: Celebrate Art Museum Day at Asia Society with Free Admission

Asia Society Museum in New York City will offer FREE admission to all visitors on Saturday May 18 as part of the Association of Art Museum Directors’ (AAMD) Art Museum Day, which coincides with International Museum Day.

Between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm the museum will offer complimentary access to our three fabulous exhibitions:

The Artful Recluse: Painting, Poetry, and Politics in 17th-Century China (through June 2), which was described by The New York Times as “compelling….applies a magnifying glass to a familiar theme and reveals a weave of moral assertion and private emotion that has pertinence for new art today.”

Patronage and Power: Selections from the Asia Society Museum Collection (through August 4).

Vandy Rattana: Bomb Ponds (through June 2), a photography and video display which is part of the citywide Season of Cambodia, a Living Arts Festival.

“AAMD believes that art should be accessible and relevant to all, and we are so pleased that Asia Society Museum is joining with us and the global community of museums to celebrate the role museums play in their communities and to encourage visitors to share their museum experiences,” said Chris Anagnos, Executive Director of AAMD.

Visitors are encouraged to share their Art Museum Day experiences via social media using the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay. Find the Asia Society Museum on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.

Asia Society Hong Kong and Asia Society Texas are participating in International Museum Day, so if you happen to be in Hong Kong or Houston, please check them out!

Opening this week in Hong Kong is the exhibition Light Before Dawn: Unofficial Chinese Art 1974-1985, presenting a revealing look at the creative spectrum of China’s most influential contemporary artists from three artist groups of the period. The exhibition is on view May 15 through September 1, 2013. Asia Society Texas welcomes visitors to explore its new building, which opened to the public in April 2012. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, the facility combines contemporary international design with an understated elegance and serenity.

We hope you can join us!
